Healthy School Culture: Social Inclusion and the New Rites of Passage

What is healthy school culture?
How can we as adults support the healthy unfolding of the children in our care?
How can we support social inclusion?
What does it mean to do that?

Kim John Payne, author of Simplicity Parenting, gives simple strategies for parents and teachers to use at home and in the classroom.

The social inclusion approach is a way of combating the problem of isolation that is, sadly, a growing part of the experience of most children today. Developed over 24 years with children from almost every continent, this approach gives practical playground, classroom, and home-based tools to work with social exclusion issues.

The social inclusion approach emphasizes politeness and courtesy as keys to establishing social impulse control and empathetic relationships at home and school and uses techniques such as the “Put Down Diet” to bring greater awareness to our verbal and nonverbal communication. The approach offers simple interventions which can be used by teachers and parents alike such as “Disapprove/Affirm-Discover-Do over,” the three foundations of helping children change negative social patterns without needing to be blamed and shamed.

About the Speaker:

Kim John Payne has been quietly and passionately working to help tens of thousands of people give voice to the feeling that something is not okay about the new normal of overwhelm that so many people are now experiencing. He offers do-able ways to realize the hopes and values we all have for ourselves and build deep connections with our children that will give families resiliency and simple joy.

A consultant and trainer to over 230 U.S. independent and public schools, Kim John Payne, M.ED, has been a school counselor, adult educator, consultant, researcher, educator, and private family counselor for twenty-seven years. He regularly gives keynote addresses at international conferences for educators, parents, and therapists and runs workshops and trainings around the world. In each role, he has been helping children, adolescents, and families explore issues such as social difficulties with siblings and classmates, attention and behavioural issues at home and school, emotional issues such as defiance, aggression, addiction and self-esteem, and the vital role living a balanced simple life brings.

For Caregivers and their Children from Birth to Three Years Old

The first years of a child’s life are full of growth and learning. The Parent and Child Program at the London Waldorf School is an opportunity for you and your children to share in the wonder of the earliest years. It offers support and guidance for young families as they begin to establish routines that encourage the healthy development of a growing child. It is also an occasion to meet other families, learn about Waldorf Education, and connect with the vibrant community at the school. Together, we will create an environment promoting the healthy development of our young children and their caregivers.

Join us for our weekly infant or toddler program. Each program is tailored to the specific age group and developmental stages, enriched with songs and movement, storytelling (with puppets), and outdoor play. You will find a gentle and nurturing environment for you and your children. It is also a place for you to learn to make handmade crafts, share a wholesome snack and find positive parental support.

This morning of playing, singing, enjoying snack, and story in a calm atmosphere nourishes parents and their young children together one morning per week, starting September to December, 2017.  Midsession enrolment is possible.  Register now as spaces are filling quickly.
